Tiny Titans: Menhaden
Most people have never heard of menhaden though some know of it by one of its more popular names: “pogey fish.” These small fish that flourish in the nutrient rich waters off Cameron Parish, boast a big economic impact on industries worldwide. A major portion — more than 92% — of the overall Gulf menhaden harvest comes from the waters off the Creole Nature Trail All American Road.

Around the world, the humble menhaden is highly valued for its oil that used in more products than can be imagined. These include perfumes, cosmetics, Omega-3 oils for human heart health supplements, medicines, paints  — even margarine in England!
